Parked my 3 next to three other generations of Mazda 3(23)s the other day.
So 90's.

You are really making me miss mine while it is out of commission!

Bummer, what happened (besides age)?
Nvmd, saw the post about the spun bearing. Get well soon!
I never owned a P5, but i was lucky enough to test drive one once. It was marvelous. If i could’ve made my lifestyle work with it, i would’ve done so immediately after the test drive.

Spun a rod bearing :( Mostly my fault. I didn’t top off my oil and took a corner much too hard. I plan on swapping the JDM FS-ZE engine for a little bit more power. I like the car too much to just let it go.

They look great, IMO. And they drive like a damn go-kart. I love it.

I don’t think there is a better handling hatchback for similar money. I’ve taken mine to the track and it has no problem keeping up in the corners.
Car and Driver had an article where they were testing a Vette through some curvey roads and the Protege5 was quite admirable at keeping up.

Is there an appreciable difference between the P5 and the sedan? Are the underpinnings all the same? Do they handle about the same?

I have never driven a sedan, so I can’t really compare the two. I want to say the P5 had a slightly sportier suspension, but I could be wrong. I know all of the powertrain and suspension bits are completely swappable. Engine is for sure the same. I bought mine with the Mazdaspeed suspension, soi to be honest I don’t actually know how well a stock P5 drives haha.
